Growley Pipes

Gem o’ the Wood: (SOLD)

August 13, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Beneath the skin of every tree lie marbled layers of finely wrought exquisitry. Your humblest crab apple holds lines and colors not even Delacroix could conceive. If the lowliest woods are so sublime, imagine how the best woods look. We can’t tell you whence came this particular piece, since the elves who grew it are quite protective. Like a garnet of greatest clarity, however, the light still sings from within. Listen well.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

The stem was hand cut out of German Acrylic, and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Halcyon: (Unavailable)

August 13, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

“You see,” he said, “I’m not interested in their politics. I’ve never met the lot of them.”
“What do you mean?” I said.

He pulled out a long, luxurious pipe with a rough blonde bowl, packed it, lit it, and sat back into a smiling reverie. I waited as he drew on it with closed eyes, for he was taken up with the river of time, and there was no pulling him out of its current.

“I mean,” he said at last, “that I’m quite present right here, in this day. What could take me out of this moment, with this pipe, at this table, outside this cafe? I’ve no time for these theoretical theatrics, trying to imagine what men are like without knowing them.”

He drew on the pipe again, and I couldn’t help but notice how sweet was the smoke, how lofty the sky, and how rich the afternoon in which we sat.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

The Sommelier: (SOLD)

Some cups were made for that tepid pig-swill they serve down the pub, but some cups were made for the finest libations life has to offer. You know, of course, which one we see before us. Carve out a long, meditative moment. Hand select your most favorite tobacco. This pipe is the page on which is writ the best poetry you know.

The Country Chap: (SOLD)

August 5, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

In the words of Roger Ambelshem from Surrey: “Confusticate and bebother the airs of these high-polished gentry! Can’t a fellow have a decent walk round the borough without being looked up to and down upon by the mottled classes and their brethren? Sometimes, a gent has no need of impressions, no cause for commensurability. Sometimes, one wants a good pipe, not a show pony. Wasn’t it Will Shakespeare who said, ‘Comparison is the thief of joy?’ Take this here pipe. Great for a stroll through the park, taking in the sights, and smoking a good blend without worrying about being aught but ordinary.”

The Withywindle: (SOLD)

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo! This is the pipe of Iarwain Ben-adar, Forn, he who is Eldest. Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. The wood was cut from the canebrakes of the Withywindle itself. If you plan on sitting beneath a willow tree any time soon, take this along, as it’s like to bring a song to your mind (though who could say why?). And of course, singing keeps the wicked willows at bay. Smoke with Old Toby.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

I dreamt this pipe up quite literally. I awoke with this shape in mind and thought I’d give it a try. This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The blast shows some nice ring grain around the belly of the bowl, and some pretty birdseye pattern on the back. The bamboo is a nice 6 knuckle yellow bamboo.

The Brandywine: (SOLD)

In southern Alabama, there grows a tomato vine that never did seem quite normal. We saved seeds, year after faithful year, and it certainly did sprout tomatoes, full and ripe and half-drunk under the deep eye of the July sun. Every summer, though, the cultivar would bring odd surprises. Three years ago, a perfectly weighted baseball drooped from a stem. Last year it was a clear glass bauble full of algae and tiny fish. This year’s crop came with one of the finest pipes we’ve ever seen. Smoke it with your shoes off, of course.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The grain is close and even all the way around the bowl. The stellar straight grain also produces some beautiful birdseye on both the top and bottom.

The Horned Hound: (SOLD)

“Do not light a fire near Glipwood Forest, not if the rangers have not ranged.” Thus begins perhaps the most important poem ever written about survival in Skree. The saying is especially true if there are horned hounds about. Thy are drawn to fire as surely as toothy cows. These dogs are as big as a colt, will eat (with mouth), stab (with horn), chase (with speed), and disobey (with arrogance) any living thing, especially if that living thing is minding its own business beside a fire.

– Panegyrics by Andrew Peterson

This pipe was inspired by a creation of one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Andrew Peterson. He is not only an outstanding singer, songwriter, poet, author and gardener, but he’s a pretty great guy too. So this pipe was made to honor the complete awesomeness of “The Horned Hound”.

The bowl was hand carved out of the best Italian Briar. The main piece is a beautiful cut of horn and the shank extension is a pretty piece of black bamboo.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Compline Scruff : (SOLD)

Ah, the end of the day! After rubbing your nose on the grindstone, you shall have a table set before you. After the table, a conversation. And this pipe will be there, lending pause and flavor to your evening confabulation. There’s something to the daily rhythm, something both familiar and far-away.

Pollywog II : (SOLD)

At the back of a swamp somewhere in Minnesota, you may chance to find a grass hut tucked away in a dim stand of birch trees. A single, muddy-looking light gleams out the window on humid nights. Inside, there lives a kind of a man – though a bit too thin, too reedy, to be human. His quick eyes are the color of new moss. If you are lost, he may prove to be your ally – only don’t get lost. This is the pipe he smokes. May it stand by you through bog and mire.

Ginger: (Unavailable)

This pipe is the subtle laugh in the corner of the billiard room. Like that crystal brandy snifter that sat on your grandfather’s shelf with other Old World artifacts, this is made for exploring the exquisite nuance of your best tobacco blends. I’ll say right up front that if you’re like me and have an eye for symmetry, and are a bit OCD about it, this is not the pipe for you 🙂 This pipe has some twists and turns that drive me nuts.  The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Evening Connoisseur: (SOLD)

This pipe is the subtle laugh in the corner of the billiard room. Like that crystal brandy snifter that sat on your grandfather’s shelf with other Old World artifacts, this is made for exploring the exquisite nuance of your best tobacco blends. It is smaller in the hand at 4″, yet completely comfortable with itself. You may find yourself propping up your feet and chuckling at nothing in particular.

Pensivist: (SOLD)

The Blasted Bent Egg can be found beneath the brims of Hemingway hats and haunting the private libraries of serious men. Often seen with a mustache, this pipe is a problem-solver and a solitudinous muller of ideas. Best smoked on dark and stormy nights.

Devonshire 614: (SOLD)

When I look at The Devonshire I think, “sophistication, elegance and the pursuit of knowledge.” I see a wise old professor pouring over dusty volumes, pausing only to puff gently on his pipe.  The Devonshire… I can’t guarantee it will make you more wise, but it will certainly make you appear to be!

This pipe was hand crafted from the finest Italian briar. It offers a wonderful 360 degree display of grain around the bowl and shank, with some nice birds eye on the bottom of the bowl.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, adorned with a Juma ring and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Gentleman’s Dublin: (SOLD)

This stacked Dublin just makes me think “class”, and “style”. Coming back from the Kansas City pipe show, where I was able to admire numerous pipes carved by some of the best, I came away with this shape in mind. I saw a similar shape designed by Tom Eltang, who remains on of my favorite carvers.

This pipe was carved out of only the best Italian briar, and blasted to show the beautiful ring grain that goes evenly around the entire bowl. A horn end cap was attached to add that extra pizazz. The horn is mostly black with just a few white markings.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

56: (SOLD)

The 56 is my playful take on the infamous Castello 55 shape. This block just begged to show of the grain in this way. The straight grain on the sides really shows it’s glory with these flat panels. Oddly enough, this pipe is extremely comfortable to hold too! And, the corners make this pipe a nice sitter.

The famous Digtoad! Well, as a pipe, it’s not so famous I suppose, but as a mythical creature wandering the forests of Glipwood, it’s infamous! If that’s got you wondering what other creatures wander the forest floors of Glipwood, look up http://wingfeathersaga.com/ . Andrew Peterson not only writes wonderful music, but amazing literature as well.

I don’t think the Digtoad has reached it’s final form in this pipe, but it’s a start.

Magnum Ramses 614: (SOLD)

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. In this particular design, I took inspiration from Peter Heding and Alex Florov, who both make wonderful Ramses pipes. To date, this is the largest Ramses I have ever made.

This pipe offers some great straight grain wrapping around the belly of the bowl. It terminates into bird eye on the back panel.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Swan Neck Rhodesian is an original creation created to produce long sleek curves. This particular piece is the first of it’s kind, but I don’t believe it will be the last. The bowl was created from the finest Italian briar and blasted to show off the wonderful ring grain that moves evenly around it.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Blasted Acorn with Horn: (Unavailable)

I made this pipe while I was visiting Grant Batson in Nashville. I was there to learn some tips and tricks, and this pipe pretty much encapsulates them all. There were a number of firsts for me with this piece. This was my first acorn, my first military mount stem, my first horn application, first brass insert ring and first bowl coat. I intend on keeping this particular pipe not only for product quality testing, but to commemorate a great time spent with Grant.

Pipe Making With Grant Batson – Follow Up

May 25, 2014Growleyblog

As a follow up to my Nashville Trip I wanted to post a few pics for you. Grant is a wonderful pipemaker and we had a great time. I look forward to putting to practice some of the new tips and tricks I learned while I was out there.

Below are the pipes we made during our shop time. This is the first pipe I’ve ever made shape first, drill second. It’s also my first use of horn, brass ring insert, and military mount. Oh, and it’s my first acorn.

Pipe Making With Grant Batson

May 18, 2014Growleyblog

Well, this is a day I’ve been forward to for a long time. I’ve admired grants work for sometime now and I’m excited to spend the next three days seeing his process and understanding what it is that Grant does to make such magical pipes.

When it comes to making pipes, there are generally speaking two ways of going about it. The first, and probably more common way, is to drill the holes first and shape the pipe second around the holes. The second method, which is becoming more popular, is to shape first and drill second. This way gives you much more flexibility when shaping your pipe. It allows you to determine what the pipe will look like as you’re carving it. In many ways, you approach the block having no preconceived ideas as to what it will look like. As I have always drilled first and shaped second, I’m excited to learn this new approach and add the skill set in to my mix.

So not only will I be learning a whole new set of skills to practice and perfect, I’ll get to spend the next three days with a wonderful person and pipemaker.

You should take the time to look at grants site. You might just find something you like and can’t live without.

Long Blasted Tomato: (SOLD)

This squat tomato came to mind after studying some of Nanna Ivarsson’s work. I wanted this tomato to have a bit of flair, so I added in a lemon drop shank, which gives it just a touch of pizazz. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar and fitted with a German Ebonite stem that has been adorned with a Juma accent ring.

The stem was fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Chasing That Pipe Dream

May 4, 2014Growleyblog

To all of you who occasionally read this blog, first let me apologize for how boring and unattended it is 🙂

I started this site to support a hobby that quickly became a passion. But having a full time job and a family of 5, has left me with minimal time to spare for hobbies and creative passions. Well, this blog is about to get much more active. Today I’m announcing that I’m unplugging from the corporate world to chase that pipe dream.

Unplugging

I wanted to post a picture that could tell the story that’s in my heart, and this one really says a lot. Having worked in the corporate world of sales for a long time, my creativity has always had to take a back row seat to things that were “more important”. But the time has come for me to give my creativity it’s day in the light.

Tomorrow marks the start of a new chapter in my life. I’m officially unplugging from the corporate machine and investing in my pipe making passion. I’ll be making pipes full time.

So with a little trepidation and much excitement, I’m stepping off and setting out to explore a brand new world.

What I’m really excited about is seeing what I can do with full dedication towards this wonderful hobby. As you can probably imagine, it’s sometimes hard to start projects and have to put them down over and over because you’ve only got a few hours at a time to work on them. I work best when I’m in the zone, and having been only able to work on pipes part time, it’s often hard to ever get in that zone. So, I expect to see an increase in quality, many new designs and better takes on old ones…and a whole lot more Growley pipes for you all to look at!

So, wish me luck and keep watch! There should be some new exciting things happening in the Growley Pipe world!

Blasted Bulldog Commemorative (SOLD)

February 7, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

This particular pipe was commissioned to commemorate a significant date for one Marine in particular. I have the utmost respect for men and women who fight for our country, and I consider it a very high honor when someone asks me to create something with the purpose of honoring specific events, happenings and memories. For this particular Marine I chose the stout and sturdy bulldog, blasted it and fashioned a stem for it that reminded me of camo.

The stem was hand cut out of German Acrylic, adorned with a classy Ebonite ring, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Morta Bulldog: (SOLD)

January 24, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

I’d like to offer up this nice little morta Bulldog. This the first pipe I’ve ever made out of morta, and this particular block of wood was dated to be around 3,400 years old. A morta pipe is a nice change of pace from briar. It’s very light and has uniquely wonderful grain. The color shown in the pictures is the wood’s natural color. This pipe has been left natural and sealed with wax.

The stem was hand cut out of German Mother-Of-Pearl Acrylic, adorned with a classy Ebonite ring, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

On a personal note, this pipe looks much better in person. My less than amateur photography skill just aren’t doing pipe justice.

Sea Horn 2.0 (SOLD)

January 19, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Ah, the not so famous “Sea Horn”. I created the original Sea Horn in my first year of pipe making as  a sort  of exercise to see how I could push my limits of pipe making. This is a smaller version of that pipe. The top of the leaves are smooth, while the bottom are sand blasted. Contrasting stain colors give it a bit of life.

The stem was hand cut out of German Tortoise Shell Acrylic and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

“GrowleyPipes” on Instagram

January 7, 2014Growleyblog

I’m opening the doors of the Growley workshop a bit wider with Instagram. I’ve recently created a new profile, @GrowleyPipes , where you’ll be able to see more of my work that’s in process. I’ll be using Instagram to show what’s on the bench, some of the new materials I’m using and even some of the tooling I use to create my pipes.

If you’d like to get in on the process a bit and see the progress of my work while it’s on the way to completion, just head on over to Instagram and look me up!

The Pendulum: (SOLD)

December 23, 2013Growleyarchived 2014

There I was, staring at a block of wood that just begged to be used to show off some wonderful birds eye. I thought about what shape would best be used to bring justice to the beautiful grain, and eventually came up with a pendulum shape. As you’ll see on the top of the bowl, the wonderful birds eye grain came through nicely, giving it an almost leathery soft look. The bottom was blasted to highlight the ring grain, and the entire piece was mounted on a  stout piece of bamboo.

The stem was carved out of German Ebonite and fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Fancy Blasted Tomato: (SOLD)

December 13, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

This squat tomato came to mind after studying some of Nanna Ivarsson’s work. I wanted this tomato to have a bit of flair, so I added in a teardrop shank, which gives it just a touch of pizazz. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar and fitted with a German Ebonite stem that has been adorned with a German amber acrylic accent ring.

The stem was fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Update On Our Adoption

December 5, 2013Growleyblog

Well, for those of you who have followed my adoption sale, I wanted to give you an update on what has turned out to be a beautiful and wonderful time in the lives of this Rowley family. Right around a month ago, we headed out China to meet the newest member of our family. My whole family went with anticipation and nervousness. Our bigger girls had never been on a flight this long…almost 24 hours of air-time alone; we had never been away from our home, family and friends this long, and we certainly had never been to China! We didn’t know what to expect….except jet lag.

Minus two times when barf bags were needed…and weren’t supplied, the flights went very well. There were no delays and no changes, and for 4 flights across the world, that’s not too shabby. We arrived in China in decent shape and were greeted by our translator. He instructed us to go have a seat at the “KFC” and get something to eat, while we waited on another adopting family to show up. This was our first interaction with the public where we had to figure out how to order when neither of us knew what the other person was saying. I pointed to some sandwiches and paid the cashier and went away somewhat proud that I had successfully “hunted and gathered” in a foreign land. Now, I know the sign said “KFC” but it just wasn’t. It was pretty terrible, even by fast food standards. And seeing how I couldn’t get them to not put ice in the drinks, we threw them away nervous of the water.

The next day we met our precious little girl. We were among 3 or 4 other families who were also waiting for their children, and ours arrived first. All eyes were on this intensely emotional first interaction. There she was, standing right in front of us after a year and a half of waiting. This moment had been written in time before we even existed. This little girl was meant for our family. She saw us for the first time in person, opened up her photo album we had sent her previously and immediately started making the connections between who she saw in the photos, and who she saw in front of her. We were her family, and she was starting to put the pieces together.

The two weeks that followed were filled with joys, laughs, anxieties, confusion, giggles, tears, frustration, and pretty much every emotion that was created. It was wonderful and trying. It was beautiful and exhausting. And other than my middle one getting a sickness that sent her to a Chinese Doctor, and my youngest getting an infected cut that gave her a fever, there’s not a lot I would change. It was meant to be. We spent our time in China filling out paperwork and touring the area  a bit. We went to a local zoo, where we as Americans became more of an attraction to those around us than the resident Pandas. We went shopping where we got to bargain for odd items, and we went out to eat at places where we almost couldn’t recognize the food.

The flights home were uneventful “barf bag wise”. We discovered that if we readily had them available before the flight took off, we never needed them. It’s like expecting it to rain, when you remembered to bring your umbrella. There’s a better chance it won’t happen if you’re prepared.

We got home ragged, tired, safe, happy and blessed. It has taken us almost two weeks to shed the jet lag and get back into a routine, but we’re doing great. The whole family is adjusting to each other better than we could ever have imagined. It was just meant to be, and already we can’t imagine our lives without Ivy-Ann in them.

Hutchmoot Pipe Of The Year

October 16, 2013Growleyblog

Recently, I returned from the 4th annual Hutchmoot conference, where I presented their first ever Pipe Of The Year. I could spend about two hours explaining what type of conference Hutchmoot is, and you may still end up confused. So in lieu of a description that will only scratch the surface, if you’re interested, you can check it out here: http://hutchmoot.com/

While Hutchmoot is certainly not a pipe or tobacco conference, the attendees tend to be of the literary and or artistic type, and in being so, a good number of them smoke pipe. I was able to gather with sometimes 15 or more to enjoy a good pipe and excellent conversation. It’s a time that I cherish and look forward to each and every year.

Last year, I was approached by several folks who asked if I’d be interested in presenting a pipe of the year. Having a special place in my heart for this conference and these wonderful people, I was thrilled. Once I had solidified my participation, I began the task of choosing the shape. After much deliberation, I chose a Dublin/Zulu type pipe. While most pipe of the year pipes tend to be exactly the same, I decided to go a different route, making them all the same size and shape, so that they’re easily recognizable as a set, but uniquely finishing them all, so that buyer’s individual preference could be satisfied. Some were smooth, some were blasted, some had ebonite stems and some had acrylic.

The outcome was very fun to watch. I got to see each individual pick their own personal pipe from the lot, and happily take it for themselves. I even had the opportunity to smoke the first break-in bowl with a number of them. It was very intriguing to see why each person picked the one they did, and somehow, each seemed to fit the buyer in a unique personal way.

I look forward to preparing the 2nd Annual Rabbit Room/Hutchmoot Pipe of the year!

Here’s a look at the pipes:

Magnum Blasted Rhodesian (Unavailable)

October 2, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

I like squat fat Rhodesians. No that isn’t the opening of a rap song. I just tend to love my Rhodesians to be very slow slung with wide rims. Compared to my standard sized pipes, this Magnum Rhodesian is a lot of pipe to handle. It offers a sizeable bowl insulated by a lot of briar to keep those long smokes cool and plesant

I created this pipe using Italian Briar. The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, adorned with a German acrylic ring and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth… although, I wouldn’t consider this particular pipe a clencher. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

September Sale!!!

September 1, 2013Growleyblog

UPDATE:

Thank you all for your interest in my pipes. And, for those of you who bought a pipe during this sale, you will forever be a part of our adoption story. I can’t thank you all enough. With a few final arrangements to make, we are only a few months away from traveling to pick up our little girl!

Thanks again.

Brian.

********************************************************************************************************************************

Over one full year ago my wife and I decided to adopt a little girl from China. There are millions of children in the world today who don’t have someone to tuck them in at night, who don’t have a chance for education, who simply don’t have someone to love them. At first, I was very hesitant to even consider the possibility of adoption because I felt that if I started learning about it, my eyes would be opened to the overwhelming tragedy that exists. I knew that if I let my mind open to the pain and reality that’s out there for these orphans, that my heart would break, and I knew I couldn’t save them all…

…but I did let myself think about it. And I realized that no, I can’t save them all, but God can use me to make a big difference in the life of at least one (or maybe two!). And that was the beginning of a major heart-change in my life.

If you’ve ever looked into adoption, you probably know that it can take a very long time. In our case, there’s a good chance it will take a year and a half. And if you’ve looked into international adoption, you probably know that it is very expensive, up to a full year’s salary in some cases.

Well, I’m very excited to say that we’re getting very close to bringing our little girl home from China, and, financially, we’re getting close as well. I’ve been using the sales of my pipes to help fund our adoption, and I’m hoping for one final push. So with all that said, I’m running a huge sale on all of my available pipes for the month of September. To that end, I’m taking a full $100 off of each and every pipe.

So whether you want to help support my family and me by taking advantage of this sale, or you simply want to buy a nice pipe at a great price, I would be greatly appreciative of any sale made this September.

Thanks for your time.

GKCPC Contest Dublin: (SOLD)

August 26, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

As a nice perk to this pretty pipe, seeing that it was my contest entry to the 2013 pipe carving contest, it will be featured in the next edition of Pipes and Tobacco Magazine. This Dublin is a version of Alex Florov’s version of Jorn Micke’s pipe. With the Kansas City carving contest promoting Dublin pipes this year, I went in search of beautiful Dublin shapes to inspire me. It’s no surprise that I was inspired once again by one of Alex’s pipes. He does such beautiful work.

This pipe is hand carved from the best Italian briar and has a very wonderful, tight straight grain. The grain is lovely all around the entire pipe. The shank was extended with an acrylic horn extension.

The stem was hand crafted from German Ebonite, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Magnum Ramses: (Unavailable)

August 26, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

Ramses Variation: (Sold)

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. For this unique pipe, I was looking for a nautical type feel.

This pipe offers some great straight grain wrapping around the sides of the bowl. And, it has some wonderful birds eye on the back and belly of the bowl.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. It was adorned with a nice piece of pre-ban ivory. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Tiger Grain Billiard: (SOLD)

This Tiger Grain Billiard was carved out of the finest Italian Briar. I used a cross-cut block to allow for the tiger grain to accent the pipe. The tiger grain flows the length of the pipe along the sides, while birds eye grain appears on the front and back of the bowl.

The saddle stem was hand cut out of German ebonite and adorned with a German acrylic horn accent ring, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Dublin: (SOLD)

This Dublin is a version of Alex Florov’s version of Jorn Micke’s pipe. With the Kansas City carving contest promoting Dublin pipes this year, I went in search of beautiful Dublin shapes to inspire me. It’s no surprise that I was inspired once again by one of Alex’s pipes. He does such beautiful work. With all that said, to be clear, this wasn’t my contest pipe. It was one I made after making my contest pipe, having enjoyed the shape and the process as much as I did.

This pipe is hand carved from the best Italian briar and has a very wonderful, tight straight grain. The grain is lovely all around the entire pipe. The shank was extended with a German Ebonite extension.

The stem was hand crafted from German creamsicle acrylic, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Devil Anse Nosewarmer 713: (SOLD)

This nosewarmer is one of the shortest pipes I make. It’s the shorter cousin to my standard Devil Anse pipe, which has had more requests for commission than any other pipe I make. This little guy is, in my opinion, a perfect nosewarmer. The bowl size is substantial for such a small pipe, and the angle of the design keeps the bowl slightly tilted away for a more comfortable smoke.

This particular piece has some fantastic grain. It’s cross cut design allows the straight grain to run the full length of the pipe on both sides. The birds eye on the top and bottom is very tight and pronounced.

The stem was hand crafted from German Amber acrylic  and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Blasted Zulu 713: (SOLD)

This take on a  Zulu gives almost a Zulu stack-type feel. The blast was produced to highlight the ring grain radiating from the heel of the bowl outward. This pipe was carved from a fine piece if Italian briar and fitted with a German Ebonite stem.

Hunting Horn 625: (Unavailable)

This pipe is somewhere between a bent Dublin and a Horn. I saw this concept a long while back in a Tom Eltang pipe, which he called his “Flock Horn”. This pipe is a bit shorter, more stout variation of that pipe. His pipe offered such wonderful curves and flow, that I simply couldn’t resist creating something similar.

There is a common misconception out there that blasted pipes are made from inferior wood to cover up blemishes. On the contrary, the ring grain on this particular piece of wood was so fantastic that I just had to blast it to let it show. It circumferences the entire bowl evenly from the heal to the rim.

I fitted this piece with an Ebonite shank cap and Ebonite stem. Both were hand cut from German Ebonite. The stem  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The stems were hand carved from German Ebonite  and German Acrylic Cumberland, and  fitted with comfort fit buttons, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Hatfields & McCoys and the Devil Anse Pipe

June 9, 2013Growleyblog

In 2012 the History Channel aired a three part miniseries titled, “Hatfields & McCoys“, staring Kevin Costner as William Anderson, leader of the Hatfields. In this series, Kevin smoked a small pipe that has been given the name of the Devil Anse. It’s certainly not the most elegant of pipes, as should probably be expected for the role it has to fill, but the frequent appearance of this pipe, most likely paired with Kevin’s stellar performances, has made the shape a bit of a buzz in the pipe world.

Since I’ve been making pipes, I’ve had more requests for this shape than any other in my repertoire. The thing I’ve found most interesting about it is that most folks have their own take on what the pipe actually is. A common theme seems to be that the Devil Anse pipe is a nosewarmer, meaning extremely short. I’ve always held that Kevin probably isn’t clenching this pipe at the tip of the bit, leaving most of the pipe showing outside. I’ve thought that he stuck a good bit of the pipe bit and stem into his mouth. While I’ve doubted the nosewarmer theory, I of course do my best to make the pipe the customer wants, which is why there are some variations on my site.

But still, I wanted to know just what the pipe actually was, so after a little research I’ve found that my initial thoughts of this pipe were true. This is a very small pipe indeed, but it’s a good deal longer than most people tend to think. While I can’t seem to find a true profile of this little mystery, this still show it fairly clear.

So, until Kevin calls me up some day and sets up a time to go smoke a pipe, this is the closest I’ll probably come to knowing for sure exactly what the Devil Anse pipe should look like.

Devil Anse Nosewarmer 513: (SOLD)

This little nosewarmer makes a wonderful pocket pipe. It’s just the right size for being on the go. The Devil Anse shape is surprisingly large by means of volume. It has a nice size chamber that will allow for a decent length smoke.

I carved this from the best Italian briar, and it shows. It has a nice display of cross grain and birds eye. This particular grain is kind of “wild”, meaning it doesn’t seem to follow traditional patterns. You can almost get lost in it’s depth and structure…or lack thereof.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and  fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Chili Pepper: (SOLD)

April 16, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

This Bamboo Chili Pepper might offer you just the flavor you need for your next smoke! it’s an elegant little pipe with a decent sized bowl. I came up with the design after just coming back from the grocery store for my wife. I apparently spent too much time in the produce section.

This pipe offers some great straight grain complimenting the shape nicely. It has some pretty birdseye on the top of the bowl all the way around. In an effort to be 100% full disclosure, there is one pit which you can see in the pictures. It measures about 4mm at it’s largest point. It has not been filled, it’s solid and has been left natural.

The bamboo has not been stained. It’s a nice piece of “black” bamboo, which is harder to find. The bamboo shank lightens up the pipe nicely, leaving the total weight of the pipe at just 1.1 oz. The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and  fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Gurgling is for bathwater and babies…not pipes!

April 9, 2013Growleyblog

I’ve been in many conversations where people talk about how their pipes gurgle, and it astounds me, not only that so many pipes gurgle, but that so many people put up with it! To me, a gurgling pipe is no different than a car that backfires. If a pipe gurgles, (in my opinion) it’s just not “running” right.

Sure, there are all kinds of arguments that can be made for the smoking style, or humidity of the tobacco and so on, but to me, that focus is a bit off. I don’t consider myself an expert smoker by any means, and to add to my novice, I tend to favor heavy aromatic tobaccos. What that means is that I probably smoke too hot, too fast, and too moist….yet, I never have to swab out my own pipes mid smoke, and I never have to deal with gurgle.

Yes, smoking style and humidity are factors in what can make a pipe gurgle, but they’re not the only factors, and certainly not the biggest in my opinion.

It’s a known fact that tobacco has moisture in it, and that heating the tobacco up causes that moisture to come out, almost like a steam. The problem begins when that moisture finds things to collect on on it’s way out of the pipe. If it finds resistance or constriction or even rough edges, it will build up and roll back into the bottom of the bowl where it will cause gurgle.

So when you’re looking for a pipe, look for one that has an open airway. The air flow should more resemble that of drinking straw than that of a coffee stir straw.

Say “NO” to gurgle!

Bamboo Rhodesian: (Unavailable)

This little Rhodesian is in spired by a Tom Eltang pipe that a friend of mine traded me. Unlike the blasted Elatang pipe, I decided to make this one smooth. RAD PAD

March 15, 2013Growleyblog

As a pipemaker, I don’t succumb to PAD (Pipe Acquisition Disorder) too often. If I see a pipe I just have to have, I typically try to make it myself. However, there comes a time when even a pipemaker needs to buy a pipe.

I think that one of the best ways you an show an artist respect and appreciation for their work, is to buy something from them, directly, and at full price. Hence, the need for my Rad PAD.

Rad Davis is a well known wonderful pipe maker. He’s been in the business for the last 10 years, and just happens to live only 25 minutes away from me! When I moved out here to Alabama, I wasn’t really making pipes yet. I had only fiddled around with one or two. When I found out there was a master pipemaker in the “neighborhood” I knew I simply had to see if he’d let me come visit his shop.

After getting completely settled in my new house I connected with Rad and asked if I could come see his shop. I figured that if anything, I might pick up a little on how pipes were made, and what tools I should. Rad very generously suggested that if I came over early, I could see him make a pipe from start to scratch. I was floored and ablaze with excitement to say the least. Here I had the rare opportunity to watch a master craftsman make an entire pipe.

Long story short, after about 5 hours of watching Rad perform what seemed like magical acts of pipe carving, I came out enlightened, and a bit dizzy trying to make sense of all the information I had just gathered. It was that day that I decided to sell my favorite BMW 740i and buy the same tools he had so that I could make pipes as he does.

After about a year of making pipes and several trips to Rad’s house it became time to show my appreciation for his help, kindness and friendship. I needed to buy one of his pipes. Not only did he make me exactly the pipe I wanted, I got to watch him make it from start to finish, just like my very first experience with him. It was a very special time for me indeed.

So, without further ado, here is my RAD PAD:

This particular piece has some fantastic grain. It’s cross cut design allows the straight grain to run the full length of the pipe on both sides. The birds eye on the top and bottom is very tight and pronounced.

The stem was hand crafted from German Eboite  and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

This Lumberman features a nice tight “tiger” grain running the full length of the stem. The tiger grain is complimented by a very pretty birds eye pattern running all along the sides of the shank and bowl.

This pipe was made from the finest Italian briar, and the stem was hand crafted from German black ebonite, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. It was adorned with a wide piece of pre ban ivory. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Magnum Hunting Horn: (SOLD)

February 15, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

Magnum Natural Bulldog: (SOLD)

February 10, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

This pipe ain’t no puppy, it’s a full grown Bulldog, and it features nice birds eye all the way around the top of the bowl. The contrast shows some very nice straight grain moving right up the bowl and all the way around. The briar was left natural to allow for a wonderful patina to enrich it’s color over the years With a 1″ chamber and plenty of briar all the way around, this bulldog should provide a long cool smoke with plenty of flavor.

This pipe was made from the finest Italian briar, and the stem was hand crafted from German black ebonite, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. It’s important to note that with the size of this pipe, the bit is a bit wider than my standard bits.  As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.
