Growley Pipes

Concertino: (SOLD)

This beautiful little pipe came together in the best possible way. The briar is one of the finest pieces of Italian Briar I’ve had the privilege of working with. The black bamboo has some wonderful natural coloring in it, and paired with a swirled creme stem it all came together very nicely.

The stem was hand cut out of German Creme Swirl Acrylic and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Cartoon Classic Rhodesian Nosewarmer: (SOLD)

This Cartoon Classic Rhodesian is based on the classic Bulldog shape, but made entirely out of proportion to give it that cartoon look. Back in the 80’s some artists drew cartoon versions of muscle cars by shortening them, making the wheels ridiculously large, and exaggerating the curves. I thought it would be fun to do a series of classic pipes with the same concept in mind.

This Rhodesian Nosewarmer is made out of the best Italian Briar wood and blasted to show the tight ring grain.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, adorned with a German Blue Swirl accent ring, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Afternoon Connoisseur: (SOLD)

This pipe is the subtle laugh in the corner of the billiard room. Like that crystal brandy snifter that sat on your grandfather’s shelf with other Old World artifacts, this is made for exploring the exquisite nuance of your best tobacco blends. It is smaller in the hand at 4″, yet completely comfortable with itself. You may find yourself propping up your feet and chuckling at nothing in particular.

Lilith (SOLD)

This pipe looks like it’s up to no good, even sitting innocently still. I imagine the one who smokes it could easily take on that same persona 🙂 I created this pipe having no idea what was in store when I first started. It’s outcome is still something I’m not sure I could have drawn up from scratch. Sometimes it’s just good to jump in and see what happens I think.

I carved this pipe from some beautiful Italian Briar, from the best supplier in the world. The tight ring grain shows off wonderfully with a light blast, and accentuates the shape in a very scaly way.

The stem is a two-piece combination that is a brand new concept from the Growley shop. It was hand carved from German Acrylic and fashioned with my comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Halley’s Comet: (SOLD)

The rare appearance of Halley’s Comet happens only about once in a lifetime, every 75 years or so. This pipe just looked to me like it was going somewhere, blazing forward. Devil Anse 2016: $345 (Available)

March 24, 2016GrowleyUncategorized

Everyone has a different idea of what the Devil Anse pipe should look like. And I’ve created multiple versions of what was smoked by Kevin Costner, on the TV Miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. Some look close, and some are way off by design.

As it turns out, the pipe he uses doesn’t fit most of our conventional standards of a pipe, in that it doesn’t actually have a removable stem. This is the first Devil Anse pipe I’ve made in 2016, and I think it makes a fine version indeed.

The briar used is the best Italian Briar sold. It has some very detailed and tight birdseye on both sides, and sweeping grain across the front and back of the bowl.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and  fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Horned Elephant’s Foot: (SOLD)

February 23, 2016Growleyarchived 2016

This Elephant’s Foot is the first of this kind to come out of my shop. The briar is a piece of absolutely beautiful Italian briar, and it shows off some very beautiful birdseye on the front and back.

The shank was hand carved from some deep black water buffalo horn. The stem was hand carved from German Cumberland Ebonite. It was created with a military mount tenon, and fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Golden Tomato (SOLD)

February 15, 2016Growleyarchived 2016

This squat tomato came to mind after studying some of Nanna Ivarsson’s work. I wanted this tomato to have a bit of flair, so I added in a lemon drop shank, which gives it just a touch of pizazz. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar, extended with some beautiful curly walnut and fitted with a German Cumberland Acrylic stem.

The stem was fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Cartoon Classics Pot: (SOLD)

January 31, 2016Growleyarchived 2016

This Cartoon Classic Pot is based on the classic Pot shape, but made entirely out of proportion to give it that cartoon look. Back in the 80’s some artists drew cartoon versions of muscle cars by shortening them, making the wheels ridiculously large, and exaggerating the curves. I thought it would be fun to do a series of classic pipes with the same concept in mind.

This Pot is made out of strawberry wood and blasted to show the tight ring grain.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, adorned with a German Cumberland ring, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Pendulum: (SOLD)

January 28, 2016Growleyarchived 2016

I created the Pendulum (a version of a Rhodesian) to show off the birdseye on top and ring grain on bottom. The bottom was blasted to highlight the ring grain, and the entire piece was mounted on a stout piece of yellow bamboo.

The stem was carved out of German Ebonite and fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Uncle Jack: (SOLD)

January 21, 2016Growleyarchived 2016

This stout poker was carved out of the finest Italian Briar. This cross cut section shows some nice variance between birdseye and straight grain. The shank is a chunky piece of yellow bamboo, and the combination of blast and smooth gives finish the pipe a nice contrast.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Carbonite Pipe: (SOLD)

No, this pipe isn’t made out of Carbonite. …But it reminds me of that iconic image of Harrison Ford playing Han Solo, when he got preserved in that block of Carbonite. This pipe was made from materials far better than Carbonite. It was made from The finest Italian Briar money can buy. This block shows some wonderful fan grain.

The stem was hand carved from German Acrylic, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Emerald Gem O’ The Wood (SOLD)

January 17, 2016Growleyarchived 2016

This green smoking machine is a robust Bent Brandy hand made out of Grecian Briar. It’s bulbous belly gives it a wonderful in-hand feel. Weighing in at 3.7 oz, I wouldn’t recommend this pipe as a clencher. It’s what I would call a “ponder pipe”, one to be held and smoked while enjoying some peace and quite, or good conversation.

The stem was hand carved from German Acrylic, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Cherry Magnum Ramses: (SOLD)

November 20, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. In this particular design, I took inspiration from Peter Heding and Alex Florov, who both make wonderful Ramses pipes. To date, this is the largest Ramses I have ever made.

This pipe offers some great straight grain wrapping around the belly of the bowl. It terminates into bird eye on the back panel.

The stem was hand carved from German Cumberland Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Eskidesian is an original Growley design, comprised with nuances of the Eskimo, Rhodesian pipes. This pipe was carved from 5,500 year old Morta wood, which has some beautiful grain.

It was finished with a German Ebonite stem, and adorned with a camel bone accent ring. The stem was fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Growley Peterson Sherlock XL11 Remake: (SOLD)

October 13, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

About a year ago, a customer asked me if I’d make him a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Pipe out of strawberry wood. At the time, it was darned near impossible to get a hold of strawberry wood in the US. Finally a year later, I was able to carve this Sherlock Holmes XL11 “replica”. The strawberry wood has some beautiful ring grain, and it was left it’s natural color, to deepen in time and with use.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Black Blasted Ramses With Camel Bone (SOLD)

September 18, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. In this particular design, I took inspiration from Peter Heding and Alex Florov, who both make wonderful Ramses pipes. To date, this is the largest Ramses I have ever made.

This blast shows some great craggy ring grain wrapping around the belly of the bowl. It terminates into bird eye on the back panel.

The stem was hand carved from German Cumberland Ebonite, adorned with camel bone, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Ramses’ Throne (SOLD)

September 9, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

Here Ramses is found sitting atop his royal throne. His right-hand man the Firebelly Digtoad sits patiently and awaits instruction. Much less patient is the Bumpy Digtoad, who isn’t quite right in his mind. The three together make a menacing brood.

The “tattoos” were hand carved with Egyptian stylings.

The stem was hand carved from German Cumberland Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. The accent ring is made of white camel bone. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Rev Ramses’ Tattoos: (SOLD)

August 28, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

The ancient pharaoh himself wanted smoking to be easy, and like any good thinker, he searched for inspiration. Standing out on the veranda one night, he looked up to the heavens. There hung the crescent moon, golden in a spangled sky and suspended seemingly without effort. The next morning, his finest artisans received a summons to court. And the rest is history.*

*Not actual history.

Devil Anse Back In The Saddle: (Sold)

August 12, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

Everyone has a different idea of what the Devil Anse pipe should look like. In the past, I’ve always created versions of what was smoked by Kevin Costner, on the TV Miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. With this pipe I decided to do my best to create an actual replica. It’s tricky to find good pics of the entire pipe, and this pipe in particular seems to defy some of the common standards. It has a very skinny shank, and appears to have an extremely small stem. With these few pictures, I worked to create a close replica, but with a saddle stem.

Devil-Anse-Collage

The Devil Anse shape is surprisingly large by means of volume. It has a nice size chamber that will allow for a decent length smoke.

I carved this from the best Italian briar, and it shows. It has a nice display of cross grain and birds eye. I has a nice birdseye on the sides of the bowl, and crossgrain on the front and back.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and  fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Gnarly Magma Chamber: (Sold)

Deep within the earth’s crust are the dragons and leviathans of old. Once, they walked the surface and rode the clouds, but as the days of nobility and majesty waned, they retreated into the belly of the earth. There they swim and frolic in great seas of molten iron, roaring and singing in the joy of the life given them. Gaze deep within the grain of this pipe, this sculpture reminiscent of the dragons’ new home. You can see them if you look close enough.

Box Pressed

Ever since I saw one of Chris Morgan’s Briar Cigars, I knew I had to try one. He has cornered the market on the idea and I have no intention of trying to compete in this space. But, I had to try my hand at the concept. So, with a few modifications, I came up with the “Box Pressed” briar cigar.

The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar and fitted with a German Cumberland Acrylic stem that has been adorned with a Juma accent ring. It has some very pretty cross grain and birds eye panels as well

As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Rowley Family Adoption

June 3, 2015Growleyblog

Guys and Gals,

Nineteen months ago, we adopted a sweet little girl from China, making us a happy family of five!

There is another little girl that belongs in our family. She is five years old, and, somehow, even though we haven’t met her yet, we love her as one of our own, and we can’t wait to bring her home!

We were so blessed to be able to fully fund our last adoption. This time? We started with $608 that our family had been collecting in an “adoption jar” since November. This is where your help is very much needed. Not everyone is called to adopt, but everyone can help bring an orphan home. You might even win a pipe in the process!

I’ve been blessed with an ability to carve pipes, and I thought it would be a fun way to help raise money to bring Saffron home.

If you’re interested in our story, here’s a 3 minute video you can watch.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

The Rowley Family

This squat tomato came to mind after studying some of Nanna Ivarsson’s work. I wanted this tomato to have a bit of flair, so I added in a lemon drop shank, which gives it just a touch of pizazz. The Scrivener: (Unavailable)

February 12, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

I stood awestruck beneath the stone door lintel, watching the scrivener hunched at his desk. A succession of spent candles lay on the floor, plucked from their holder at his elbow and apparently replaced with little thought for their predecessors’ good work. A slim pipe protruded from the catch of his teeth, sending brooding whorls of tobacco smoke to dance above his head. Sweat beaded and glistened on the man’s gathered brow. His eager eyes, red from many vigils, held fast to his writing. He did not even notice my entrance. His quill scratched and flew over leaf after leaf of parchment. By turns, a smile broke out at the corner of his mouth, and I found myself envious of one so delighted by his work.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The crosscut grain reveals some nice grain patterns with birds eye on the sided and cross grain across the front and back the pipe, and the top of the bowl. This particular piece was fancied up with a copper shank cap, which will age with the use of the pipe.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Magma Chamber Reactivated: (Sold)

February 11, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

Deep within the earth’s crust are the dragons and leviathans of old. Once, they walked the surface and rode the clouds, but as the days of nobility and majesty waned, they retreated into the belly of the earth. There they swim and frolic in great seas of molten iron, roaring and singing in the joy of the life given them. Gaze deep within the grain of this pipe, this sculpture reminiscent of the dragons’ new home. You can see them if you look close enough.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The grain offers a nice flame all the way around the bowl, accented by just a tad of ring grain blast. The horn extension has just a nice touch of brown marbling for flair.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Ramses’ Evil Twin (SOLD)

February 3, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

The hush of the library deepened as Jameson lay the manuscript on the table. He scanned it with expert eyes while I picked a broken way through the glyphs, knowing only enough of the ancient words to call myself a poor student.

“Ah, Pentaware!” said Jameson, leaning back with a leisurely puff of his pipe.

“What?”
“Here, you see?” he said.
He pointed a finger at a vulture and some other symbols I did not know.
“He was implicated in the murder of Ramses the Third,” he went on. “The so-called ‘harem conspiracy.’ He was barely upon the cusp of manhood when they forced him to drink poison in return for his treason.”
I looked at the manuscript, imagining the horrid coup behind its indecipherable words.
“You know,” Jameson said, “they say that this was his.”
He took the pipe from his lips and waved it at me.
“Rubbish!” I said. “The Egyptians didn’t make pipes. And that would make it over two millennia old to boot. What rot!”
“So you say,” said Jameson. “But the Egyptians were actually quite skilled at woodcraft. Furthermore,” here a gleam leapt from his grey eyes, “you don’t know where I got it.”

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. The Sea Dog’s Tale Vol.II (SOLD)

This pipe has wound around the Cape of Good Hope a time or two. It tends to blether on at length when it has an audience, and it’s never short of a story. Known to poke out of salt-rimmed beards and stare a thousand yards out over the water, this is perfect for well-traveled tobacco blends. Will cause you to put a finer edge on your cutlass.

Copperhead: (SOLD)

January 28, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

In the arid hill country of the Southern Appalachians, a tiny dirt track coils its way up Rich Mountain in the brazen light of a July noon. Hickory pines and stunted junipers dot the scraggly slopes, rising up like mendicants out of the brier and sedge. Through this winding land slips a well-known character. He is the color of a new penny, with nary a straight line to his body. If you see him, tip your hat to him. Pass by at arm’s length though. He’s like you—he needs a little space now and again.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This curvy pipe was carved to show some pretty straight grain along the sides and blasted to highlight the birds eye on the top and bottom. The shank was carved out of a pretty piece of black horn, and shows some pretty light marbling, almost like a ghost vapor.

The Military Mount stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

“56” (SOLD)

The 56 is my playful take on the infamous Castello 55 shape. This block just begged to show of the grain in this way. The straight grain on the sides really shows it’s glory with these flat panels. Oddly enough, this pipe is extremely comfortable to hold too! And, the design make this pipe a nice sitter, both horizontally and vertically.

Making a Devil Anse Pipe for a True Hatfield

January 7, 2015Growleyblog

The other day I was sitting outside my favorite local cigar shop and a gentleman walks out and says, “You’re the pipe guy, aren’t ya?” I always love it when a conversation starts that way. He proceeded to tell me how he’d like to have a pipe custom made for him. I love custom work because I get to know the future owner a bit. I believe that getting to understand their personality a bit helps me create a pipe that fits them better.

As Alan and I got looking through my archives, we talked about the use of the pipe. He wanted it specifically for his boat, it had to be a clencher, He also wanted it blasted so it could weather a bit of abuse without showing it. We went over several pages of pipes considering this and that, when I suggested the Devil Anse pipe. They’re sort of a cutty which has a nautical feel to it, and they’re shorter but with a generous bowl size.

But it was the name, Devil’s Anse that spoke to Alan. As soon as he heard I made the Devil Anse he said, “I’ve gotta have it!”. His new found decisiveness left me puzzled, until he followed up by saying, “You know my last name is Hatfield?” Done and done, the Devil Anse pipe it was. I think I was as excited to make it as he was to receive it.

I listened as he educated me briefly on some of the Hatfield’s history, and though I knew it to be true already it reminded me that these shows, The Hatfields & McCoys with actors like Kevin Costner, actually came from a part of real history. Real History with real people that still get talked about today.

I don’t know….you put a beard on Alan and he might just give Kevin Costner a run for his money.

Kawarimono: (Unavailable)

December 23, 2014Growleyarchived 2015

Like a haiku, a lone fish swimming past a river reed evokes beauty with simplicity. Legend holds that, long ago, before man wrote things down, a great school of koi swam up the Yellow River. Coming to a high waterfall, they strove against the current to surmount it. After a century of struggle, only one fish reached the top. It was transformed into a golden dragon.

This is the pipe for the quiet afternoon, the time of simply appreciating the things you can see. Watch the trees in their symmetry. Watch the grass as it reaches for the sun. Watch the small curling of smoke into the air. Heiwa!

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was carved from the finest Italian Briar. This pipe will smoke much like a cutty in terms of bowl angle. The shape is the first of it’s kind out of the Growley workshop, but probably not the last. This pierced Kawarimono was blasted to show the grain with some areas left smooth to highlight the birdseye.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

This pipe was carved from the worst piece of Italian Briar I’ve ever seen. It had about every issue known to mankind, but it still wanted to be a pipe. Beaten, torn and riddled with holes, I’ll happily make this pipe a shop pipe and see if I can give her the life she was hoping to have.

Ramses: (Sold)

December 17, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The ancient pharaoh himself wanted smoking to be easy, and like any good thinker, he searched for inspiration. Standing out on the veranda one night, he looked up to the heavens. There hung the crescent moon, golden in a spangled sky and suspended seemingly without effort. The next morning, his finest artisans received a summons to court. And the rest is history.*

Growley Pipe Bags

November 9, 2014GrowleyAccessories

$55 + $3 for domestic shipping.

Click on the pictures below to see them full size!

I’ve had an affinity for quality leather goods ever since I was a boy. Back in the day, my Dad taught me how to oil my new baseball glove so that it remained soft and supple to help it last a long time. That experience introduced me to quality leather and taught me the importance of leather care.

After some time of smoking pipes (and getting tired of trying to find enough pockets to carry them in, along with lighters, tampers, pipe cleaners and tobacco), I decided I needed to take the plunge and find a good pipe bag; one that had class yet maintained a rugged manliness. My search came up short. Everything I found seemed to resemble women’s change purses.

After coming up short I turned to Saddleback Leather to see if they might have something to offer. Knowing that they produce only high quality products I was glad to find they did in fact offer a great solution; one that with a minor tweak would make a perfect pipe bag.

So with their permission to add a pipe tool and my brand, I am pleased to offer the Growley Pipes / Saddleback Leather Pipe bag.

This bag will easily hold a tin of your favorite tobacco, a sleeve of pipe cleaners, a lighter, a pipe tool, and one or two pipes. With the flap closed and the cable wrapped, you’ll no longer need to worry about losing your favorite lighter. Everything stays safely secured during travel. And since it’s an open design, you’ll find your own perfect balance of pipes, tools and tobacco for your every day cary.

Dimensions: (Approximate Size)

  • External: 7” W x 6 ¼” H x 2” D
  • Internal: 6 ¾” W x 5 ¾” H x 1 ¾” D
  • 0.4 pounds

P.S.  It’s no secret that you can buy this bag directly from Saddleback Leather, add a pipe tool and have the same bag. They are a wonderful company and you should be sure to check out their website:  http://www.saddlebackleather.com/ . I’m merely grateful to be able to sell this quality product to further support my customers and the pipe community!

“They’ll fight over it when you’re dead!” …Yes, it will last that long.

Golden Ramses: (SOLD)

November 6, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The ancient pharaoh himself wanted smoking to be easy, and like any good thinker, he searched for inspiration. Standing out on the veranda one night, he looked up to the heavens. There hung the crescent moon, golden in a spangled sky and suspended seemingly without effort. The next morning, his finest artisans received a summons to court. And the rest is history.*

*Not actual history.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Swan Neck Eskidesian: (SOLD)

November 6, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The Swan Neck Eskidesian was an original creation of mine that was born out of another original called the Eskidesian. The Eskidesian was an Eskimo, Rhodesian mashup. The Swan Neck Eskidesian is a much more sleek and elegant version.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Wandering Birchleaf: (SOLD)

October 21, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Some shapes were not meant to be easily captured. There they hang off the boughs by the river, drifting this way and that in the breeze. They are dark yet lovely in the summer, golden and silvery in fall. It takes alluvial soil to grow a leaf so poetic and ineffable—soil that journeys far and tells many stories. Of course, an homage to something so near to the river must point in the river’s direction. That is, slightly around the bend, where you’ll find your next adventure.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

I can’t say that I truly have a full grasp on the blowfish yet, and I’ve yet to set out to make one. This particular pipe was an exercise in following the grain, and what came of it could in fact be my first blowfish. The briar has some very pretty cross grain and birdseye. The shank extension is a beautiful piece of creme water buffalo horn.

The stem was hand cut out of German Cumberland Ebonite, and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Listener: (SOLD)

September 1, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Who could say why they come to him? He himself is a mystery—a man with a knowing gaze and an impenetrable life story. He seems to be that person who’s ear is worthy of your problem. What’s more, he seems to care.

Of course, a man like this cannot be forever looking for a place to set his pipe. His eyes are utterly fixed upon the poor soul before him. No tragic tale is complete without a gentle listener, after all, and a listener must pay attention. There is something in the smoke that wreathes that humble face. You cannot quite place it, but you know it is there.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe makes a nice sitter. It was blasted to show the ring grain. The top was finished partially smooth with some natural plateaux as well, and shows some birdseye. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar and is mounted atop some beautiful horn. The natural bamboo toasted to add color. The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Summer Gruffman: (Unavailable)

August 27, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

So, you’re not the conversational type. Don’t let them hold it against you. There’s plenty of talk to go around, and even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent. This is the pipe for you, the quiet one, the one who watches the others from the edge of the room. It doesn’t mind if you’re mulling over the latest commentary on Plutarch or simply enjoying the evening air. Quiet is quiet. This is a pipe that recognizes that one of the marks of good friendship is the capacity to sit together and say nothing at all.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This little Rhodesian sports a full blast. The top shows some birdseye and the blast shows some nice ring grain. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar. The stem was hand cut out of German Creamsicle Acrylic and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Magma Chamber: (SOLD)

August 26, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The horn extension has just a tad of brown marbling for flair.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Sun Dried Tomato: (SOLD)

August 22, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

In southern Alabama, there grows a tomato vine that never did seem quite normal. We saved seeds, year after faithful year, and it certainly did sprout tomatoes, full and ripe and half-drunk under the deep eye of the July sun. Every summer, though, the cultivar would bring odd surprises. Three years ago, a perfectly weighted baseball drooped from a stem. Last year it was a clear glass bauble full of algae and tiny fish. This year’s crop came with one of the finest pipes we’ve ever seen. Smoke it with your shoes off, of course.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The grain is close and even all the way around the bowl. The stellar straight grain also produces some beautiful birdseye on both the top and bottom.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Evening Connoisseur In Brown (Unavailable)

August 21, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

This pipe is the subtle laugh in the corner of the billiard room. Like that crystal brandy snifter that sat on your grandfather’s shelf with other Old World artifacts, this is made for exploring the exquisite nuance of your best tobacco blends. It is smaller in the hand at 4″, yet completely comfortable with itself. You may find yourself propping up your feet and chuckling at nothing in particular.

This little reverse calabash was made from the finest Italian Briar crosscut, to show some pretty birds eye on the sides and stripes on the top and bottom. Ramses The Great: (SOLD)

August 19, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The ancient pharaoh himself wanted smoking to be easy, and like any good thinker, he searched for inspiration. Standing out on the veranda one night, he looked up to the heavens. There hung the crescent moon, golden in a spangled sky and suspended seemingly without effort. The next morning, his finest artisans received a summons to court. And the rest is history.*

*Not actual history.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.
