Growley Pipes

Emperor Snail: (Unavailable)

December 20, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

This pipe was carved from the worst piece of Italian Briar I’ve ever seen. It had about every issue known to mankind, but it still wanted to be a pipe. Beaten, torn and riddled with holes, I’ll happily make this pipe a shop pipe and see if I can give her the life she was hoping to have.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and mother of pearl acrylic, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Ramses: (Sold)

December 17, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The ancient pharaoh himself wanted smoking to be easy, and like any good thinker, he searched for inspiration. Standing out on the veranda one night, he looked up to the heavens. There hung the crescent moon, golden in a spangled sky and suspended seemingly without effort. The next morning, his finest artisans received a summons to court. And the rest is history.*

*Not actual history.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. In this particular design, I took inspiration from Peter Heding and Alex Florov, who both make wonderful Ramses pipes. To date, this is the largest Ramses I have ever made.

This pipe offers some great straight grain wrapping around the belly of the bowl. It terminates into bird eye on the back panel.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Swan Neck Eskidesian: (SOLD)

November 6, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The Swan Neck Eskidesian was an original creation of mine that was born out of another original called the Eskidesian. The Eskidesian was an Eskimo, Rhodesian mashup. The Swan Neck Eskidesian is a much more sleek and elegant version.

Wandering Birchleaf: (SOLD)

October 21, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Some shapes were not meant to be easily captured. There they hang off the boughs by the river, drifting this way and that in the breeze. They are dark yet lovely in the summer, golden and silvery in fall. It takes alluvial soil to grow a leaf so poetic and ineffable—soil that journeys far and tells many stories. Of course, an homage to something so near to the river must point in the river’s direction. That is, slightly around the bend, where you’ll find your next adventure.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

I can’t say that I truly have a full grasp on the blowfish yet, and I’ve yet to set out to make one. This particular pipe was an exercise in following the grain, and what came of it could in fact be my first blowfish. The briar has some very pretty cross grain and birdseye. The shank extension is a beautiful piece of creme water buffalo horn.

The stem was hand cut out of German Cumberland Ebonite, and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Listener: (SOLD)

September 1, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Who could say why they come to him? He himself is a mystery—a man with a knowing gaze and an impenetrable life story. He seems to be that person who’s ear is worthy of your problem. What’s more, he seems to care.

Of course, a man like this cannot be forever looking for a place to set his pipe. His eyes are utterly fixed upon the poor soul before him. No tragic tale is complete without a gentle listener, after all, and a listener must pay attention. There is something in the smoke that wreathes that humble face. You cannot quite place it, but you know it is there.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe makes a nice sitter. It was blasted to show the ring grain. The top was finished partially smooth with some natural plateaux as well, and shows some birdseye. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar and is mounted atop some beautiful horn. The natural bamboo toasted to add color. The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Summer Gruffman: (Unavailable)

August 27, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

So, you’re not the conversational type. Don’t let them hold it against you. There’s plenty of talk to go around, and even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent. This is the pipe for you, the quiet one, the one who watches the others from the edge of the room. It doesn’t mind if you’re mulling over the latest commentary on Plutarch or simply enjoying the evening air. Quiet is quiet. This is a pipe that recognizes that one of the marks of good friendship is the capacity to sit together and say nothing at all.

This little Rhodesian sports a full blast. The top shows some birdseye and the blast shows some nice ring grain. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar. The stem was hand cut out of German Creamsicle Acrylic and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Winter Gruffman: (SOLD)

August 27, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

So, you’re not the conversational type. Don’t let them hold it against you. There’s plenty of talk to go around, and even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent. This is the pipe for you, the quiet one, the one who watches the others from the edge of the room. It doesn’t mind if you’re mulling over the latest commentary on Plutarch or simply enjoying the evening air. Quiet is quiet. This is a pipe that recognizes that one of the marks of good friendship is the capacity to sit together and say nothing at all.

The Magma Chamber: (SOLD)

August 26, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Deep within the earth’s crust are the dragons and leviathans of old. Once, they walked the surface and rode the clouds, but as the days of nobility and majesty waned, they retreated into the belly of the earth. There they swim and frolic in great seas of molten iron, roaring and singing in the joy of the life given them. Gaze deep within the grain of this pipe, this sculpture reminiscent of the dragons’ new home. You can see them if you look close enough.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The grain offers a nice flame all the way around the bowl, accented by just a tad of ring grain blast. The horn extension has just a tad of brown marbling for flair.

Sun Dried Tomato: (SOLD)

August 22, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

In southern Alabama, there grows a tomato vine that never did seem quite normal. We saved seeds, year after faithful year, and it certainly did sprout tomatoes, full and ripe and half-drunk under the deep eye of the July sun. Every summer, though, the cultivar would bring odd surprises. Three years ago, a perfectly weighted baseball drooped from a stem. Last year it was a clear glass bauble full of algae and tiny fish. This year’s crop came with one of the finest pipes we’ve ever seen. Smoke it with your shoes off, of course.

Evening Connoisseur In Brown (Unavailable)

This pipe is the subtle laugh in the corner of the billiard room. Like that crystal brandy snifter that sat on your grandfather’s shelf with other Old World artifacts, this is made for exploring the exquisite nuance of your best tobacco blends. It is smaller in the hand at 4″, yet completely comfortable with itself. You may find yourself propping up your feet and chuckling at nothing in particular.

Ramses The Great: (SOLD)

August 19, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

The ancient pharaoh himself wanted smoking to be easy, and like any good thinker, he searched for inspiration. Standing out on the veranda one night, he looked up to the heavens. There hung the crescent moon, golden in a spangled sky and suspended seemingly without effort. The next morning, his finest artisans received a summons to court. And the rest is history.*

*Not actual history.

Gem o’ the Wood: (SOLD)

August 13, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Beneath the skin of every tree lie marbled layers of finely wrought exquisitry. Your humblest crab apple holds lines and colors not even Delacroix could conceive. If the lowliest woods are so sublime, imagine how the best woods look. We can’t tell you whence came this particular piece, since the elves who grew it are quite protective. Like a garnet of greatest clarity, however, the light still sings from within. Listen well.

The Halcyon: (Unavailable)

August 13, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

“You see,” he said, “I’m not interested in their politics. I’ve never met the lot of them.”
“What do you mean?” I said.

He pulled out a long, luxurious pipe with a rough blonde bowl, packed it, lit it, and sat back into a smiling reverie. I waited as he drew on it with closed eyes, for he was taken up with the river of time, and there was no pulling him out of its current.

“I mean,” he said at last, “that I’m quite present right here, in this day. What could take me out of this moment, with this pipe, at this table, outside this cafe? I’ve no time for these theoretical theatrics, trying to imagine what men are like without knowing them.”

He drew on the pipe again, and I couldn’t help but notice how sweet was the smoke, how lofty the sky, and how rich the afternoon in which we sat.

The Horned Hound: (SOLD)

“Do not light a fire near Glipwood Forest, not if the rangers have not ranged.” Thus begins perhaps the most important poem ever written about survival in Skree. The saying is especially true if there are horned hounds about. Thy are drawn to fire as surely as toothy cows. These dogs are as big as a colt, will eat (with mouth), stab (with horn), chase (with speed), and disobey (with arrogance) any living thing, especially if that living thing is minding its own business beside a fire.

– Panegyrics by Andrew Peterson

This pipe was inspired by a creation of one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Andrew Peterson. He is not only an outstanding singer, songwriter, poet, author and gardener, but he’s a pretty great guy too. So this pipe was made to honor the complete awesomeness of “The Horned Hound”.

The bowl was hand carved out of the best Italian Briar. The main piece is a beautiful cut of horn and the shank extension is a pretty piece of black bamboo.

‘Ello, guv’nah! As me old dad would say, this here’s one fine cherry! Open enough for the master tobacconist, yet stout enough for a constitutional in Stepney. Good for an afternoon dangling your feet over the Lea, or sitting by the fire at home. Raise a glass, remember the bells at Mary-le-Bow, and enjoy this fine poker.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. It was blasted to accent the grain. The shank extension is a pretty piece of yellow bamboo.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Compline Scruff : (SOLD)

Ah, the end of the day! After rubbing your nose on the grindstone, you shall have a table set before you. After the table, a conversation. And this pipe will be there, lending pause and flavor to your evening confabulation. Your beard has gotten a little wild and wily by this hour, but this pipe is okay with that, being a little wild and wily itself. So sit down. Take a load off. There’s something to the daily rhythm, something both familiar and far-away.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar, and the grain is certainly superb! It has beautiful grain radiating around the belly and towards the plateau, complemented by some pretty birds eye on the front. The shank extension is a pretty piece of yellow bamboo.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Pollywog II : (SOLD)

At the back of a swamp somewhere in Minnesota, you may chance to find a grass hut tucked away in a dim stand of birch trees. A single, muddy-looking light gleams out the window on humid nights. Inside, there lives a kind of a man – though a bit too thin, too reedy, to be human. His quick eyes are the color of new moss. If you are lost, he may prove to be your ally – only don’t get lost. This is the pipe he smokes. May it stand by you through bog and mire.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This Pollywog pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar, and the grain is certainly superb! It has beautiful grain radiating around the bowl, complemented by some pretty birds eye on the top and bottom. The shank extension is a pretty piece of horn.

Ginger: (Unavailable)

This pipe is the subtle laugh in the corner of the billiard room. Like that crystal brandy snifter that sat on your grandfather’s shelf with other Old World artifacts, this is made for exploring the exquisite nuance of your best tobacco blends. It is smaller in the hand at 4″, yet completely comfortable with itself. You may find yourself propping up your feet and chuckling at nothing in particular.

The Sea Dog’s Tale: (SOLD)

This pipe has wound around the Cape of Good Hope a time or two. It tends to blether on at length when it has an audience, and it’s never short of a story. Known to poke out of salt-rimmed beards and stare a thousand yards out over the water, this is perfect for well-traveled tobacco blends. Will cause you to put a finer edge on your cutlass.
– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

Devonshire 614: (SOLD)

When I look at The Devonshire I think, “sophistication, elegance and the pursuit of knowledge.” I see a wise old professor pouring over dusty volumes, pausing only to puff gently on his pipe.  The Devonshire… I can’t guarantee it will make you more wise, but it will certainly make you appear to be!

This pipe was hand crafted from the finest Italian briar. It offers a wonderful 360 degree display of grain around the bowl and shank, with some nice birds eye on the bottom of the bowl.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, adorned with a Juma ring and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Gentleman’s Dublin: (SOLD)

This stacked Dublin just makes me think “class”, and “style”. Coming back from the Kansas City pipe show, where I was able to admire numerous pipes carved by some of the best, I came away with this shape in mind. I saw a similar shape designed by Tom Eltang, who remains on of my favorite carvers.

This pipe was carved out of only the best Italian briar, and blasted to show the beautiful ring grain that goes evenly around the entire bowl. A horn end cap was attached to add that extra pizazz. The horn is mostly black with just a few white markings.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The 56 is my playful take on the infamous Castello 55 shape. This block just begged to show of the grain in this way. The straight grain on the sides really shows it’s glory with these flat panels. Oddly enough, this pipe is extremely comfortable to hold too! And, the corners make this pipe a nice sitter.

Magnum Ramses 614: (SOLD)

Rotten Tomato Nosewarmer: (SOLD)

This squat tomato came to mind after studying some of Nanna Ivarsson’s work. I wanted this tomato to have a bit of flair, so I added in a lemon drop shank, which gives it just a touch of pizazz. The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar and fitted with a hand carved stem made from the finest German Ebonite.

The stem was fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Blasted Acorn with Horn: (Unavailable)

I made this pipe while I was visiting Grant Batson in Nashville. I was there to learn some tips and tricks, and this pipe pretty much encapsulates them all. There were a number of firsts for me with this piece. This was my first acorn, my first military mount stem, my first horn application, first brass insert ring and first bowl coat. I intend on keeping this particular pipe not only for product quality testing, but to commemorate a great time spent with Grant.

The length of this pipe along with the fact that it’s drawing through bamboo should make it a very nice cool smoking pipe.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Blasted Bulldog Commemorative (SOLD)

February 7, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

This particular pipe was commissioned to commemorate a significant date for one Marine in particular. I have the utmost respect for men and women who fight for our country, and I consider it a very high honor when someone asks me to create something with the purpose of honoring specific events, happenings and memories. For this particular Marine I chose the stout and sturdy bulldog, blasted it and fashioned a stem for it that reminded me of camo.

The stem was hand cut out of German Acrylic, adorned with a classy Ebonite ring, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Morta Bulldog: (SOLD)

January 24, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

I’d like to offer up this nice little morta Bulldog. This the first pipe I’ve ever made out of morta, and this particular block of wood was dated to be around 3,400 years old. A morta pipe is a nice change of pace from briar. It’s very light and has uniquely wonderful grain. The color shown in the pictures is the wood’s natural color. This pipe has been left natural and sealed with wax.

The stem was hand cut out of German Mother-Of-Pearl Acrylic, adorned with a classy Ebonite ring, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

On a personal note, this pipe looks much better in person. My less than amateur photography skill just aren’t doing pipe justice.

Sea Horn 2.0 (SOLD)

January 19, 2014Growleyarchived 2014

Ah, the not so famous “Sea Horn”. I created the original Sea Horn in my first year of pipe making as  a sort  of exercise to see how I could push my limits of pipe making. This is a smaller version of that pipe. The top of the leaves are smooth, while the bottom are sand blasted. Contrasting stain colors give it a bit of life.

The stem was hand cut out of German Tortoise Shell Acrylic and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Pendulum: (SOLD)

December 23, 2013Growleyarchived 2014

There I was, staring at a block of wood that just begged to be used to show off some wonderful birds eye. I thought about what shape would best be used to bring justice to the beautiful grain, and eventually came up with a pendulum shape. As you’ll see on the top of the bowl, the wonderful birds eye grain came through nicely, giving it an almost leathery soft look. The bottom was blasted to highlight the ring grain, and the entire piece was mounted on a  stout piece of bamboo.

The stem was carved out of German Ebonite and fashioned with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.
