Cherry Magnum Ramses: (SOLD)

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. In this particular design, I took inspiration from Peter Heding and Alex Florov, who both make wonderful Ramses pipes. To date, this is the largest Ramses I have ever made.

This pipe offers some great straight grain wrapping around the belly of the bowl. It terminates into bird eye on the back panel.

The stem was hand carved from German Cumberland Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Growley Peterson Sherlock XL11 Remake: (SOLD)

About a year ago, a customer asked me if I’d make him a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Pipe out of strawberry wood. At the time, it was darned near impossible to get a hold of strawberry wood in the US. Finally a year later, I was able to carve this Sherlock Holmes XL11 “replica”. The strawberry wood has some beautiful ring grain, and it was left it’s natural color, to deepen in time and with use.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Rev Ramses’ Tattoos: (SOLD)

August 28, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

The ancient pharaoh himself wanted smoking to be easy, and like any good thinker, he searched for inspiration. Standing out on the veranda one night, he looked up to the heavens. There hung the crescent moon, golden in a spangled sky and suspended seemingly without effort. The next morning, his finest artisans received a summons to court. And the rest is history.*

*Not actual history.

Devil Anse Back In The Saddle: (Sold)

August 12, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

Everyone has a different idea of what the Devil Anse pipe should look like. In the past, I’ve always created versions of what was smoked by Kevin Costner, on the TV Miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. With this pipe I decided to do my best to create an actual replica. It’s tricky to find good pics of the entire pipe, and this pipe in particular seems to defy some of the common standards. It has a very skinny shank, and appears to have an extremely small stem. With these few pictures, I worked to create a close replica, but with a saddle stem.

Devil-Anse-Collage

The Devil Anse shape is surprisingly large by means of volume. It has a nice size chamber that will allow for a decent length smoke.

I carved this from the best Italian briar, and it shows. It has a nice display of cross grain and birds eye. I has a nice birdseye on the sides of the bowl, and crossgrain on the front and back.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite and  fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Devil Anse Replica: (Sold)

August 1, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

Everyone has a different idea of what the Devil Anse pipe should look like. In the past, I’ve always created versions of what was smoked by Kevin Costner, on the TV Miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. With this pipe I decided to do my best to create an actual replica. It’s tricky to find good pics of the entire pipe, and this pipe in particular seems to defy some of the common standards. It has a very skinny shank, and appears to have an extremely small stem. With these few pictures, I worked to create the best replica I could.

The Gnarly Magma Chamber: (Sold)

Deep within the earth’s crust are the dragons and leviathans of old. Once, they walked the surface and rode the clouds, but as the days of nobility and majesty waned, they retreated into the belly of the earth. There they swim and frolic in great seas of molten iron, roaring and singing in the joy of the life given them. Gaze deep within the grain of this pipe, this sculpture reminiscent of the dragons’ new home. You can see them if you look close enough.

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The grain offers a nice flame all the way around the bowl, accented by just a tad of ring grain blast.

Box Pressed

Ever since I saw one of Chris Morgan’s Briar Cigars, I knew I had to try one. He has cornered the market on the idea and I have no intention of trying to compete in this space. But, I had to try my hand at the concept. So, with a few modifications, I came up with the “Box Pressed” briar cigar.

The pipe was carved from a fine piece of Italian briar and fitted with a German Cumberland Acrylic stem that has been adorned with a Juma accent ring. It has some very pretty cross grain and birds eye panels as well

As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right airflow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Scrivener: (Unavailable)

February 12, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

I stood awestruck beneath the stone door lintel, watching the scrivener hunched at his desk. A succession of spent candles lay on the floor, plucked from their holder at his elbow and apparently replaced with little thought for their predecessors’ good work. A slim pipe protruded from the catch of his teeth, sending brooding whorls of tobacco smoke to dance above his head. Sweat beaded and glistened on the man’s gathered brow. His eager eyes, red from many vigils, held fast to his writing. He did not even notice my entrance. His quill scratched and flew over leaf after leaf of parchment. By turns, a smile broke out at the corner of his mouth, and I found myself envious of one so delighted by his work.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was had carved from the finest Italian briar. The crosscut grain reveals some nice grain patterns with birds eye on the sided and cross grain across the front and back the pipe, and the top of the bowl. This particular piece was fancied up with a copper shank cap, which will age with the use of the pipe.

The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and  was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Ramses’ Evil Twin (SOLD)

February 3, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

The hush of the library deepened as Jameson lay the manuscript on the table. He scanned it with expert eyes while I picked a broken way through the glyphs, knowing only enough of the ancient words to call myself a poor student.

“Ah, Pentaware!” said Jameson, leaning back with a leisurely puff of his pipe.

“What?”
“Here, you see?” he said.
He pointed a finger at a vulture and some other symbols I did not know.
“He was implicated in the murder of Ramses the Third,” he went on. “The so-called ‘harem conspiracy.’ He was barely upon the cusp of manhood when they forced him to drink poison in return for his treason.”
I looked at the manuscript, imagining the horrid coup behind its indecipherable words.
“You know,” Jameson said, “they say that this was his.”
He took the pipe from his lips and waved it at me.
“Rubbish!” I said. “The Egyptians didn’t make pipes. And that would make it over two millennia old to boot. What rot!”
“So you say,” said Jameson. “But the Egyptians were actually quite skilled at woodcraft. Furthermore,” here a gleam leapt from his grey eyes, “you don’t know where I got it.”

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

The Ramses pipe is one of the most comfortable pipes I’ve ever smoked. It hangs effortlessly and almost unnoticed. The Ramses shape was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh, and has since been carved by many wonderful pipemakers, who have made their own contributions to the design. In this particular design, I took inspiration from Peter Heding and Alex Florov, who both make wonderful Ramses pipes. To date, this is the largest Ramses I have ever made.

This blast shows some great craggy ring grain wrapping around the belly of the bowl. It terminates into bird eye on the back panel.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

The Sea Dog’s Tale Vol.II (SOLD)

This pipe has wound around the Cape of Good Hope a time or two. It tends to blether on at length when it has an audience, and it’s never short of a story. Known to poke out of salt-rimmed beards and stare a thousand yards out over the water, this is perfect for well-traveled tobacco blends. Will cause you to put a finer edge on your cutlass.

Copperhead: (SOLD)

January 28, 2015Growleyarchived 2015

In the arid hill country of the Southern Appalachians, a tiny dirt track coils its way up Rich Mountain in the brazen light of a July noon. Hickory pines and stunted junipers dot the scraggly slopes, rising up like mendicants out of the brier and sedge. Through this winding land slips a well-known character. He is the color of a new penny, with nary a straight line to his body. If you see him, tip your hat to him. Pass by at arm’s length though. He’s like you—he needs a little space now and again.

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This curvy pipe was carved to show some pretty straight grain along the sides and blasted to highlight the birds eye on the top and bottom. The shank was carved out of a pretty piece of black horn, and shows some pretty light marbling, almost like a ghost vapor.

The Military Mount stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

“56” (SOLD)

The 56 is my playful take on the infamous Castello 55 shape. This block just begged to show of the grain in this way. The straight grain on the sides really shows it’s glory with these flat panels. Oddly enough, this pipe is extremely comfortable to hold too! And, the design make this pipe a nice sitter, both horizontally and vertically.

Kawarimono: (Unavailable)

December 23, 2014Growleyarchived 2015

Like a haiku, a lone fish swimming past a river reed evokes beauty with simplicity. Legend holds that, long ago, before man wrote things down, a great school of koi swam up the Yellow River. Coming to a high waterfall, they strove against the current to surmount it. After a century of struggle, only one fish reached the top. It was transformed into a golden dragon.

This is the pipe for the quiet afternoon, the time of simply appreciating the things you can see. Watch the trees in their symmetry. Watch the grass as it reaches for the sun. Watch the small curling of smoke into the air. Heiwa!

– Panegyrics by Adam Whipple

This pipe was carved from the finest Italian Briar. This pipe will smoke much like a cutty in terms of bowl angle. The shape is the first of it’s kind out of the Growley workshop, but probably not the last. This pierced Kawarimono was blasted to show the grain with some areas left smooth to highlight the birdseye.

The stem was hand carved from German Ebonite, and was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Evening Connoisseur Straight Grain: (SOLD)

August 21, 2014Growleyarchived 2015

This pipe is the subtle laugh in the corner of the billiard room. Like that crystal brandy snifter that sat on your grandfather’s shelf with other Old World artifacts, this is made for exploring the exquisite nuance of your best tobacco blends. It is smaller in the hand at 4″, yet completely comfortable with itself. You may find yourself propping up your feet and chuckling at nothing in particular.

This little reverse calabash was made from the finest Italian Briar crosscut, to show some pretty birds eye on the sides and stripes on the top and bottom. The stem was hand cut out of German Ebonite, and it was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.
