Growley Pipes

Magnum Half Blasted Bulldog: (SOLD)

February 6, 2013Growleyarchived 2013

This pipe ain’t no puppy, it’s a full grown Bulldog, and it features nice birds eye all the way around the top of the bowl. The blast also shows some nice ring grain circling the bowl, complimented by very tight straight grain moving right up the bowl and all the way around. With a 1″ chamber and plenty of briar all the way around, this bulldog should provide a long cool smoke with plenty of flavor.

This pipe was made from the finest Italian briar, and the stem was hand crafted from German black ebonite, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. It’s important to note that with the size of this pipe, the bit is a bit wider than my standard bits.  As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

How would a Growley pipe hold up if a “Hun” were smoking it?

December 10, 2012Growleyblog

How would a Growley pipe hold up if a “Hun” were smoking it? Well, we will just have to wait and see.
Several weeks ago I was contacted by Darryl Quon. He wanted to know if I’d make a Devil’s Anse pipe for him. Seeing that I love to make that particular pipe, I gladly accepted.

As with with most of my customers, Darrel and I have exchanged several friendly email messages. He mentioned that he had been busy “On Set” all day and apologized for a late response to one of my messages. Not being able to restrain my curiosity, I asked him what he does on set.

It turns out that while Darrel is an extremely nice and pleasant person to talk to, he’s also a killer, kick butt, no nonsense, run around on fire and punch people in the throat stuntman and actor. He’s been in a variety of wonderful movies including one of my (and my kid’s) favorites, The Night At The Museum”, in which he was one of the fantastic Huns who was ready to tear Ben Stiller into pieces.

The Devil’s Anse pipe made it to Canada where his wonderful new owner will put it through it’s paces. If Darryl treats his pipes like he does his coworkers, then I probably should have ruggedized it…

Sea Bean: (SOLD)

December 8, 2012Growleyarchived 2013

The Sea Bean takes a nod from a “Walnut”, designed by Rainer Barbi. I fell in love with the shape immediately and had to make a Growley version of it. Living by the Gulf, this shape reminds me of those odd little sea beans that show show up on the beach glossy, smooth and round.

This pipe was made from the finest Italian briar, and the wonderful grain proves it’s worth using only the best wood. The straight grain on this pipe goes all the way around the bowl and is some of the nicest I’ve seen yet. It’s complimented by a nice portion of tight birds eye on the bottom.

The stem was hand crafted from German black ebonite, and was fashioned with a comfort bit. As with all my pipes, I’ve opened this pipe up properly to give it the the right air flow to provide a cool dry smoke.

Billiard – Blue Cumberland (Unavailable)

This pipe has a bit of the traditional and non-traditional intermingled. While the shape is more on the traditional side, the stems accents it with a less traditional blue cumberland stem.

The hand cut stem was made from a German blue ebonite, accented with a copper band. The blue color is subtle and ads just a bit of flavor to it. The Devonshire: (Unavailable)

October 21, 2012Growleyarchived 2012

When I look at The Devonshire I think, “sophistication, elegance and the pursuit of knowledge.” I see a wise old professor pouring over dusty volumes, pausing only to puff gently on his pipe.  The Devonshire… I can’t guarantee it will make you more wise, but it will certainly make you apear to be!

This pipe was hand crafted from the finest Italian briar. It offers a wonderful 360 degree display of grain around the bowl and shank, with some nice birds eye on the bottom of the bowl. The hand cut stem was made from a product named Juma. Juma has been around for years, but has only just recently started showing up more in the pipe world. It’s a wonderful product that offers the low maintenance of acrylic with the look and feel of ebonite. The stem was fitted with a comfort fit button, which makes it comfortable and easy to hold in your mouth.

Devil Anse Pair: (SOLD)

September 7, 2012Growleyarchived 2012

Here is a pair of Devils Anse Pipes. It’s an interesting process to make a “pair” of pipes. In some ways you have to be robotic and artistic at the same time; robotic in that the same movements and measurements need to be made to make them similar, artistic in that you need to let go of the measurements at some point and let each pipe flow.

This pair is a sort of “his and her’s” set. Both are made with outstanding Italian briar and German ebonite. One is smooth finished and one is sand blast finished. Other than the color and finish, there are very few differences between the two…two of a kind!

Hurricane Billiard: (Unavailable)

August 28, 2012Growleyarchived 2012

You could call this grain a “Hurricane” of birds eye and flame grain all swirled up in a Billiard. However, the name better indicates the environment in which I carved it. I’m currently waiting for Hurricane Isaac to hit and figured there’s no better way to take my mind off a storm than to make a pipe.

This Billiard was hand crafted from the finest Italian briar. This particular block provided a plethora of fine birds eye and  flame grain, seemingly all swirled asymmetrically together.

The stem was hand cut from German amber flake acrylic, and was fashioned with a comfort bit and a wide open draw.

Horn: (SOLD)

August 18, 2012Growleyarchived 2012

This Horn was crafted for the long smoke. With a chamber depth of just under 2 inches, it should smoke cool and smooth for a good long time. It was carefully hand crafted from the finest Italian briar, specifically placed in the block to show off the beautiful stripes, which run perfectly from the beginning of the shank, to the top of the bowl on both the right and left side. The front and back are adorned with a beautiful bird’s eye grain.

The stem was hand cut from the finest German Ebonite and fashioned with a comfort bit and a wide open draw.

Dimensions:

Length: 6.5″
Chamber Depth: 1.93″
Chamber Bore: .75″

Eskimo: (SOLD)

August 14, 2012Growleyarchived 2012

This particular Eskimo was made in an effort to produce a pipe similar to that of one of my favorite pipe makers, Tom Eltang, who makes an outstanding Eskimo.

It was carefully hand crafted from the finest Italian briar, and the stem was hand cut from the finest German Ebonite and opened up for wide draw.

A Ramses Commission: The Journey

July 9, 2012Growleyblog

A fun and tense part of my work is commission work. Recently I took on a Ramses commission for a customer. The Ramses design was originally designed by the great Bo Nordh. Bo was the original creator of the Ramses shape. This shape is very difficult for many reasons. Probably the most difficult for me is the drilling. The drilling angles are so steep that it’s very easy to drill wrong and either have the draught hole enter the chamber way too high, or have it end up being oblong making it too big.

Here’s a picture of the block drawn up and ready for drilling:

Once the appropriate angles have been determined the drilling begins…

I can easily spend an hour at this stage, fidgeting with angles, widths, measurements and so on just to make sure it’s perfect. As my grandfather always said, “Measure twice, cut once”. I think I measured this a dozen times, just to be sure. But in the end, it’s worth it. The drilling happened as planned, a nice size draught hole at the bottom center of the chamber. Here’s a pic of it drilled.

Now that it’s drilled it’s time to fit the stem. All of my stems are hand cut. This one will be a saddle stem created from ebonite. Shaping without a stem attached for this kind of pipe is typically counterproductive.

Ok, I have a snug fitting stem cut so it’s on to the part I love the most, the shaping! This is the second most difficult part of this particular pipe. All of it has to be done by hand and a Ramses has a number of curves, lines and facets, all of which have to pace nicely together.

The back side of this Ramses is curved almost like a surf board, while the bowl has a similar shape to a jet engine on a 747. The two have to come together as one piece. If placed right in the block, the grain will start from the back (surfboard) leaving a wonderful birds eye across the entire plain, and stretch all around the sides of the bowl (jet engine) finishing in a birds eye across the belly of the front. With the right block of wood, this can have a wonderful effect.

Here’s the rough shape…

Before doing too much more work on the stummel, it’s time to get to work on that stem. Saddle stems finish this shape off nicely, but take a bit more work to open them up properly so that they smoke open and free of resistance. This is a process that can easily take me an hour to complete.

Rough cut of the stem…

After about an hour of sanding, staining and polishing, here’s the final product…
